BioWare Compares ‘Star Wars’ MMO Combat To ‘WoW,’ ‘Age of Conan’ And ‘The Force Unleashed’

There is much we don’t know about LucasArts and BioWare’s newly announced, currently PC-only MMO “Star Wars: The Old Republic.”
This week’s announcement didn’t explain many important aspects to the game, including how combat works. It is slow? Fast? Turn-based? Action-centric?
I spent time on Tuesday with BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk, who attempted to explain — as much as he could — what “The Old Republic”’s combat is like, using extreme points of comparison: “World of WarCraft( Buy wow gold ) ” and “EverQuest” against “Age of Conan” and “The Force Unleashed.”
Here’s what Zeschuck said.
MTV Multiplayer: I really like “The Force Unleashed,” and that’s one end, an action take on “Star Wars.” And then you have traditional MMOs like “World of Warcraft ( Currency: wow gold ) ,” “EverQuest” — you’re pressing a button, it’s doing an action. And then you have, more recently, MMOs like “Age of Conan,” which introduced a combo system. You’ve talked about how you want to introduce visceral combat. If we take, on one hand, “EverQuest,” where you press a button and it does something, and a more action-oriented MMO like “Age of Conan,” where would you place “The Old Republic”?
Greg Zeschuk, BioWare co-founder: That’s a good question. At some level, I can’t tell you. Not in the sense that “because I can’” [because it's a secret] but because we don’t know quite yet. What really what it comes down to is the gameplay and the iteration and trying it out. We have a lot of ideas.
MTV Multiplayer: Would you consider it action-oriented? More hands-on?
Zeschuk: That’s a tough one. I mean, I think the main goal, the key thing we’re trying to solve, is that…does it look, from the user’s perspective, that it could be cut from the movie? That’s the very first thing, and then how we got there…to certain degrees, it’s yet to be determined. We have a system that works and ‘hey, it looks like the movie’ but what do you to get there is the key next question. I don’t think we have a good answer for that yet. The way we tend to develop is we hit one goal and then we go, ‘okay, let’s start iterating.’
MTV Multiplayer: How can we take that to the next level?
Zeschuk: Yeah. So I think the interesting thing is…the key thing you want to have is capturing the sense that the player has a really good sense of control and that’s the key thing to solve for us, is that visceral level. If it looks good, now we’re onto the ‘how do they feel like they’ve got the control while it’s looking good?’ That’s kind of where we’re at.
***
Readers, what style of combat do you want in “The Old Republic”? Do you want it to be as hands-on as “The Force Unleashed” or as removed as “World of WarCraft” ( Buy wow gold ) ?

World of Warcraft Zombie Infection

In the build up to the upcoming expansion Wrath of the Lich King (November 13th), at midnight last night, players found themselves infected with a disease after opening a suspicious crate in one of the city’s docks. Within minutes, if left untreated, players saw their characters transformed into zombies, with new spells and abilities.

While playing as a zombie, it is possible to attack other players and even non-player characters, passing the disease along, and creating more undead fiends.

News of the infection spread fast, and within a short time, World of Warcraft ( Buy wow gold ) was crawling with zombies. However, Blizzard have placed healers in all cities to cure players of the disease before the transformation takes place. Some of the playable classes in the game, such as Paladins and Druids, can also cure characters of the disease. This prompted a few people to complain on WoW’s official forums that a full-scale plague was impossible, and therefore, the whole thing was a bit pointless. Blizzard’s response clearly hinted that there is much more to come.

World Of Warcraft Faces Zombie Invasion

The arrival of the world of warcraft ( Buy wow gold ) expansion Wrath of the Lich King is being heralded by a zombie invasion - but it’s the players themselves who are being turned into shambling undead.
Reports are “flooding in” about a zombie uprising in the game, caused by infected crates found in the town of
Booty Bay. Eurogamer reports that diseased players have ten minutes to be cured by healers from the Argent Dawn faction or by other players with the “Cure Disease” spell, or they become zombies, hostile to everything in the world except other undead. Players who are turned get a new zombie skill bar, along with the ability to spread the undead plague to other players, but once they join the legions of the undead, the only way out is death.
“You can no longer cast the spells/abilities that you had as a normal character, and formerly friendly NPCs now consider you an enemy. You can, however, cast new, unique zombie spells,” Blizzard wrote in a “Zombie Infestation Survival Guide” posted on the World of Warcraft ( Currency: wow gold ) forums. “As a zombie, you are part of a special faction that is friendly with all zombies and can converse with them, regardless of whether they were part of the Horde or Alliance in their mortal existences.”
The Argent Dawn healers have appeared throughout the World of Warcraft in response to the plague and will automatically heal nearby players, but some people still aren’t terribly pleased with this recent turn of events, particularly those who don’t enjoy PvP combat. Unlike the Corrupted Blood plague, however, this one looks fairly easy to contain and control - although at least one Blizzard staffer has posted an ominous-sounding message in the forums obliquely implying that situation could change.

World of Warcraft Players React to Zombie Plague

What does the World of Warcraft community think of the undead apocalypse? Read on.
world of warcraft ( Buy wow gold ) saw the opening act for the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King expansion unfold last night with a full-on zombie apocalypse. Allowing players to both fight off and become flesh-eating ghouls themselves, this divisive, game-wide event pits brother against brother in what’s shaping up to be the MMORPG equivalent of the American Civil War — only with brain-eating corpses instead of hardtack-eating Confederates. As stalwart supporters of all things undead — we’ll even be focusing on the topic on next week’s episode of 1UP FM — we thought it was a pretty righteous way to escalate player anticipation for the next chapter of Warcraft. But what does the community at large think? We trolled the official World of Warcraft forums to find out just that.
The consensus appears to be that while some of the players are just as enthused as we are about the increase in brain consumption in their MMO of choice, just as many feel that the zombie outbreak event is actually getting in the way of the game they’re paying to play. Take this surprisingly well-constructed argument from Ravth, for example:
“Let’s say someone *doesn’t* want to participate, as some of my guild’s leveling alts did not. Unfortunately, they are FORCED to participate, even passively. They are affected by this, both in terms of being physical attacked by not only “
Alliance” zombies, but also by their own faction. This contradicts the very nature of a PvE server, where you only have to fight people by your own volition.”

Others are welcoming their newfound zombie overlords with open arms. Driven by the novelty of the experience, many players are actively seeking out infection, often with the intent of attacking their own faction. Some simply embrace the outbreak as a pleasant diversion from the repetitive endgame grind. One such player, Seiferalmasy, summed up his feelings nicely in this thread:
“The pre-WotLK world event is amazing. We infected all of Stormwind, Lakeshire, Goldshire, and were working on Ironforge before I logged. The Scourge Invasion in 2006 lacked a lot of things to do, it was plagued with problems, and simply wasn’t fun. Giving players the reins to do it themselves was a great move.”
In any case, the zombie outbreak is an inescapable reality for World of Warcraft (Currency: wow gold ) players, and will probably remain so for the foreseeable future. Whether you support the walking dead or smite them, there are a few threads that are sure to make the zombie occupation of Azeroth easier on you. Bornakk’s Zombie Infestation Survival Guide gives a basic, Blizzard-sponsored rundown of what to expect from the event, while Synel’s post on zombie misinformation offers numerous suggestions for would-be brain munchers and zombie slayers alike.
With Wrath of the Lich King still several weeks away, the zombie plague isn’t expected to end anytime soon. In fact, things are more than likely going to get much, much worse. Kisirani — a Blizzard developer — posted this rather ominous response to a player complaining that the undead infection was too easy to dispel: “It certainly does seem containable, doesn’t it? :)” Another Blizzard poster by the name of Nethaera replied to a zombie-related thread with, “Yes, this is all there is… Nothing more to see here.” You can probably draw your own conclusions, but it looks like this is just the start of a much bigger event.
Blizzard developers have previously hinted that they’d love to introduce sweeping changes to the world environment — such as the outright destruction of capital city Stormwind — but the guaranteed backlash from players proved too much of a deterrent. Although this event is a baby-step in that direction, the reaction from subscribers has already been so volatile that it begs the question: In a genre where stagnation and repetition are a tremendous concern, how do you please a fan base that’s totally averse to change?

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Could Sell 5 Million in First Month – analyst

Janco Partners’ Mike Hickey believes Activision Blizzard is the perfect combo, like cigarettes and iPods, and he sees the new world of warcraft ( Buy wow gold ) expansion doing very well in its first month.

In his latest industry note, Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey talks about the state of publishing behemoth Activision Blizzard, which he sees “as a conceptual blend of Apple and Phillip Morris, combining an innovative entertainment experience with addictive game play.” Even with the economic downturn, Activision Blizzard is in fantastic shape with $3 billion in cash (18% of market cap) and no debt.
That said, Hickey does warn that “there are no guidance heroes in our current economic/market malaise,” and he does expect Activision Blizzard to lower expectations after the company reports its third-quarter fiscal results. “Despite our enthusiasm for the Company’s holiday product line and our belief that the video game industry will remain relatively resilient during an economic slump; we expect elevated concerns over a fading consumer, retailer hesitance for building inventory and a significantly reduced stock price, has likely afforded management the option to reduce investor expectations,” he said.
In addition to the impending release of Guitar Hero: World Tour, one game that is expected to be absolutely huge for Activision Blizzard will be the newest expansion to the MMO phenomenon that is World of Warcraft ( Currency: wow gold ) . In fact, Hickey anticipates that Wrath of the Lich King could sell several million in a few weeks.
“The game’s last expansion pack, The Burning Crusade, sold 2.4 million copies within the first 24 hours of release and 3.5 million copies within the first month. The WOW subscriber base totaled 8 million when Burning Crusade was released, producing an astonishing 44% attach rate. A similar attach rate for the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King (leveraging approximately 11 million WOW subscribers), would yield a sell through of roughly 5 million units in the first month,” he explained.

6 World of Warcraft characters at once

Do you think video games like World of Warcraft Buy wow gold are too complex? Try playing with 36 characters at once!
Warcraft addict “Prepared” has set a new standard for gamers everywhere, setting up 11 computers to run 36 separate games World of Warcraft at the same time.
To achieve such a feat, Prepared uses a “multi-boxing” utility called Octopus, which allows him to control multiple computers and multiple characters from a few controllers.
“I have macros that set my main assist/cast/follow,” says Prepared in a message board post. “Any of the eight screens to the front can be set to main assist/cast/follow as my mouse scrolls to them all using Octopus.”
Prepared has raised 32 Orc shaman to level 61 to compliment his other 8 level 70’s.
With the characters Prepared can solo content that was meant for dozens of single players. He can also enter arenas in which he can use his co-ordination to kill other gamers with his tandem of characters.
For those considering a similar setup, Prepared reminds us that World of Warcraft ( Currency: wow gold )’s subscriptions can add up, especially if you’re paying them 36 times over.
“It costs me exactly $
5,711 in subscription costs per year with 36 accounts on the 6 month pay schedule,” says Prepared. “Not bad considering I’m looking at it like it’s a hobby and there are more expensive hobbies out there than World of Warcraft.”
Although Prepared thinks that the sacrifice is worth it, there is still one major bill on the horizon he’s not looking forward to.
“When Wrath of the Lich King is released, I plan to be at the store when it opens and will purchase 36 copies of it,” says Prepared. “With tax, it should be about $1500 for all of them. Then the shaman are on their way to level 80 along with the priest, druid and mage.”
