The 30th Anniversary of the MMO

Today marks the thirtieth anniversary of the creation of MUD (Multi-User Dungeon), a game that gave rise to a thousand different MUD iterations and eventually the vast, hyper-lucrative MMO genre.
On October 20, 1978, Roy Trubshaw, a programmer at the
University of Essex, and Richard Bartle (pictured right) launched MUD — a game that proved revolutionary in its ability to create an overarching, text-based world that (relatively) large numbers of players could share simultaneously.
Proving the dedication this sort of game can spawn, MUD is still running in various forms throughout the world. It may not have the flashy graphics or millions of players that current market leaders like World of Warcraft ( Buy wow gold ) boast, but a thirty-year lifespan is an incredible achievement.
Richard Bartle penned something of a short retrospective on his blog in celebration of the milestone that’s well worth a read if only for the historical significance.

Mythic “flattered” by Warcraft’s imitation combat

Blizzad’s latest move to introduce open world PVP combat to World of Warcraft is “absolutely a reaction to Warhammer,” according to Mark Jacobs, CEO of Mythic.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Jacobs talked about the latest PVP features to be included in the World of Warcraft ( Buy wow gold )expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, many of which, he claims, are based on Warhammer Online.
“Oh absolutely,” responded Jacobs, when asked if this was a move by Blizzard to position World of Warcraft against Warhammer Online. “I think imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
“You have a game that’s been out for four years, they’ve never put in world PVP like ours, they’ve never been able to level through PVP like in ours. I think it’s absolutely a reaction to Warhammer,” Jacobs added. “It wasn’t like all of a sudden the idea of open world PVP or levelling through PVP came into their heads and went ‘nobody’s ever done this before’.”
“I don’t think it was accidental that they’re talking about doing it when Warhammer comes out. Four years and suddenly, miraculously, at the same time Warhammer comes out that’s when they start talking about these things… I think it was Jeff Kaplan who said they like to look at other games and learn from them - well, I’m flattered.”
Mythic’s CEO, went on to discuss the uncertainty involved in predicting how many of the currently registered users will be converted into paying subscribers, following the end of the 30 day free trial that comes packaged with the boxed product.
“If we’re successful, we’ll have a high conversion rate and we’ll keep the vast majority of our subs,” he explained, adding: “No one has been billed yet, so we won’t know this really for at least several months, in terms of how well we’re doing, unless we start off horribly.”
“Everything we’ve done internally, in terms of looking at internal polls, people posting on forums, emails from people, all we’ve seen so far is that we’re well on track.”

Military Tactics in the World of Warcraft to Improve Your Pv

World of Warcraft ( Currency: wow gold ) is a game of Player versus Player (PvP) action. It is all about war and real military tactics translate well into the game. Here are some real tactics that you can use to improve your pvp in the game.
All for one and one for all
This is a tactic that was made famous by the British Navy in the 19th century. Up until that time when two fleets of ships engaged in combat each ship would find an enemy to pair up against. But this concept says that all the ships in the British fleet should simultaneously attack one enemy ship and sink it real fast. This tactic is perfect for world of Warcraft ( Buy wow gold ). If you are in a group of players and you encounter an enemy group you should call out one enemy and then all attack him at the same time. In a matter of five seconds the chosen enemy is gone and now your party of five is facing a party of four. You have a distinct advantage. You should all focus on the next foe and take him out. Using a tactic like this can make your group practically unstoppable.
Tommy Drills
This is a common term for performing the same actions over and over again. It was commonly used for learning how to load, fire, clear and reload a weapon. The purpose of repeating the drill many many times was to make it second nature. This way, when you are in combat you dont have to think about it at all it comes automatically. You should do this with your warcraft skills. Set up your tool bar with your best weapons and defenses and then in the arena, in challenges, and in real pvp you practice the same set of button combinations. Doing this over and over will make it automatic and you practically unstoppable.
Special Forces Team Interlocking Skills
Special forces teams are small teams of soldiers that are all trained in different skills. This allows them, as a team to successfully handle a very wide range of problems. In warcraft, particularly on the battlefields like
Arathi Basin or Warsong Gulch the pitch of battle is very feverish and people are fighting in a haphazard manner. You can significantly increase your chances of success if you just team up with one person with an opposite skill set. If you are a magic user type you should look for a warrior or rogue type and follow him around and conversely, if you are a hack and slash, toe-to-toe damage type you should find a magic user type to befriend or just follow around. Having two very different skill sets focused on an opponent brings an incredible array of weapons to bear that nobody few players can overcome.
The title of the game “Warcraft” says it all and it is only natural that some of the best combat techniques used by the military translate well into the game. With a little know how and a little practice you can apply these techniques and dramatically improve your pvp performance.
The author has blurred the line between reality and Warcraft by building a virtual reality chamber in his living room where he plays warcraft after work.

Consumer Electronics Association predicts 3.5 percent sales growth (but that’s not really good news)

The Consumer Electronics Association—the folks who organize CES, which I just registered for a few minutes ago—have whipped up a study that shows a 3.5 percent growth in consumer spending this holiday season. That may sound good, 3.5 percent growth, but it is a half-percentage point drop compared to last year. As such, there’s more than a tinge of “doom and gloom” to take from the numbers.
Like you need me to tell you, but consumers are more than a little worried about how the volatile economy will affect their spending habits this season. Things like video games, laptops and digital cameras are all in danger of, um, not being bought as much as they were last year.
More specifically, the CEA sees a 3.9 percent increase in demand for A/V equipment, including TVs and fancy speakers; a 5.6 percent increase in video game sales; an 11 percent increase in cellphone sales; and, worryingly, a 1 percent drop in the sale of proper computers.
Frankly, as long as I have a World of Warcraft ( Buy wow gold ) account and access to Usenet/BitTorrent I’m golden. I shall not want!

Classes Changes in Build 9061

Death KnightTree balancing and Unholy damageWe have Blood, Frost and Unholy at pretty similar dps at the moment so I’m not sure why Blood would feel underpowered for you guys. Bloody Vengeance alone gives Blood a big boost to white damage, while Frost really doesn’t have much that can compete.Gargoyle does do nice burst damage, but that’s at the expense of Unholy Blight usually, which in turn hurts your Scourge Strikes. But we are messing with Unholy now to deflate its damage a little. Blood-Caked Blade cooldownYeah, I think it’s a bug. We can’t think of a good reason why it needs a cooldown at all. Frigid DreadplateWe rewrote the spell and the tooltip to be simpler and less confusing. It’s now just
1/2/3% less chance to be melee hit. Druid New Druid out of combat rez in Wrath of the Lich KingWe don’t think an out of combat rez for druids is a balance problem. We did it to make druids more attractive healers for 5-player dungeons. It was frustrating for someone to die and have to run back nearly every time with a druid healing. The only possible balance issue that comes to mind is the druid who stealths into an instance and brings back the whole group to get around respawns. But really, that seems like such a minor concern compared to he major hassle of not being able to rez fallen comrades more often than once every 10 min, that we thought it was worth just making the change. HunterUpcoming hunter changesWe probably are going to let Barrage affect Aimed Shot. We looked at Explosive Shot again and its damage seemed like a significant increase over Arcane Shot, but if Survival ends up low, then Explosive is probably where we’ll try to make up the difference. Master’s Call not working properlyStill, it’s hard to tell sometimes with abilities that involve pet movement if the data are set up correctly and there’s just a code bug somewhere or if the spell itself is just borked. Ferocious InspirationsLots of haste on gear. Part of that is because we don’t have a huge canvas to work with. We can’t put a ton of Strength and Spirit on hunter gear. Also, keep in mind that we aren’t trying to make the best possible gear for you. We want you to toss out less optimal pieces for more optimal pieces. Finally, keep in mind that gear is one of the things we use to let players demonstrate mastery of the game. Making the decision of whether that new ring or belt is an upgrade should require a little bit of thought. That’s what makes it interesting.

Low dodge % in Wrath of the Lich KingI seem to be having trouble coming up with a way to explain it that makes sense to you. We don’t want you to have as much dodge as a rogue or a druid or a tank. If you have great offense and great defense then we’re not sure how to balance you. We want you to run away when someone gets close, not stand and take the hits. Mages Blink or Ice Block or Frost Nova to get away from melee. We gave hunters Disengage to try to do the same thing. Note that we don’t want it to be an automatic get of jail free cardm, sometimes we want the melee to kill you. Maybe they still kill you too much, but it’s hard for us to tell if that’s a hunter failing or Retadins and Unholy DKs doing too much burst damage. Hunters without LOS issues seem to be able to kill stuff just fine, so it may be that is your Arena weakness and not melee getting up in your stuff. Wing Clip effectivity and mana costIt’s still a 50% snare. The duration is shorter than Hamstring, but is duration really what’s killing you? It’s possible it’s too expensive. DisengageDisengage isn’t supposed to remove snares. We do want it to move you the same distance whether snared or not, but that takes new code, so it will take a little while. We did recently lower the mana cost from 14% to 5%. It is off the GCD now. Scatter ShotWe talk a lot about making it baseline, but it’s also a very attractive talent in one particular spec. It’s hard to argue that hunters of all classes (except maybe rogues) need more CC. Aspect of the ViperWe like the design of Viper overall. It’s cooler to have to shift your strategy to regen without actually interrupting your ability to deal damage. Warrior Future of Arms of Warrior not determined yet.Sudden Death, Overpower and Deep Wounds are up constantly. The dps is at the top of the charts. We’re not sure what to do about it yet, because I don’t think Fury is that high. Hardly anyone (maybe the hunters) is that high. New TCG Wallpaper: Kael’thasThe latest addition to the World of Warcraft ( Buy wow gold ) wallpapers section is another offering taken from the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game. You can adorn your desktop with the dark power surrounding Kael’thas, lord of the sin’dorei, and Al’ar, his phoenix.New Fan Art: Blood Elf PortraitSoilworker’s latest creation, Blood Elf Portrait, has been added to the Blizzard Fan Art gallery. Gaze upon the haunting, dark beauty of one of the sin’dorei!

Blizzard Speaks Out on DRM

Seems as though everyone has something to say about DRM, and the latest preacher to step on the soapbox is Blizzard’s CEO Mike Morhaime.
Unfortunately, there needs to a little disclaimer before revealing what Morhaime had to say: it’s simple, and it’s brief. But, when looking at the overall picture of pirates vs. anti-piracy, it’s good to hear the wisdom a prominent figure even if his words are as brief as a pair of Calvin Klein’s

According to an interview conducted with Wired.com , Morhaime revealed that Blizzard’s next MMO has nothing to do with World of Warcraft (buy wow gold ) , but will be a new IP. However, he seemed clueless about the backlash against EA’s confused PC game, Spore. It’s understandable though: Blizzard has been focusing on Starcraft II , revealing Diablo 3 and preparing for Blizzcon rather than worrying about a competitor’s product. However, once brought up to speed, the Blizzard CEO seemed confusingly disconnected by the backlash.
Wired thus asked what his plans were for DRM in Starcraft II and Diablo 3. “Those are things we’re still evaluating,” he said, “but we do wanna make it pretty easy for players to play the game, wherever they are. Nowadays people have multiple systems. They shouldn’t necessarily be able to play the game … they shouldn’t be able to log in multiple times on as many computers as they have without buying multiple copies of the game. Like, you can play WarCraft IIIwarcraft iii , or World of Warcraft ( Currency: wow gold ) even, from multiple locations. I think you should be able to do that.”

Morhaime certainly has a point. Unlimited installations - but using only one registered account - makes a lot of sense. Gamers who format their hard drives on a regular basis won’t have to worry about installation limitations next year or even in five years. The drawback to this plan could possibly be that an internet connection is required to initially activate the game. And what about ten years down the road. Will the games still be supported? Or, will consumers be left with a dead product. There’s no doubt that anti-piracy conjures up demons many wish would just fade back into the night.
Additionally, wired.com conducted another Blizzard interview , this time with executive vice president of game design _design Rob Pardo as he threw in his two cents about the company’s DRM plans. Once again, Spore was brought up as DRM’s flagship by Wired, however Pardo seemed more in tune to what’s going on surrounding the best-selling Pc game. In fact, he openly admits that Battle.net is Blizzard’s most effective DRM.
“If you wanna play online on Battle.net with other players you’re going to have to have a legitimate copy,” he said. “That’s really kinda been the thing that’s always saved us from a lot of the PC piracy that I think hurts a lot of other single-player-only games.”
Pardo went on to explain that Blizzard currently has no plans to implement a DRM system that requires the game to “phone home” every time it initially loads. “We do now have the online store where we’re doing digital distribution on your account,” he added. “In those particular cases, you have to be online to actually download the game, but once you have it, you’re fine. I think our approach — if you want to use an analogy — we take an approach that’s more similar to Steam than EA, let’s say.”
So far, it appears that Blizzard wants to keep the DRM aggravation minimal while still protecting their intellectual property. If Blizzard’s store follows the same plan used by EA’s online store and Valve’s Steam service, the problems with DRM infiltration could be minimal at best. Still, with Spore’s negative publicity representing a new twist in DRM, many PC gamers may still feel a sense of dread even when purchasing games online.
