Add to your game: Programs enhance World of Warcraft experience

If you want to get the most out of your playing experience with “World of Warcraft,” you’re going to need more than just the basic game you install.
The way to do that is fairly simple: Go to a site such as curse.com and download some helpful add-ons.
Add-ons are programs that work within your “world of Warcraft
” game to enhance the experience and make things easier. This is especially true if you’re a member of a raiding guild.
If your guild regularly goes to 25-man raids, you need to have several add-ons to make the process run as smoothly as possible. The basic need is “Deadly Boss Mods.” This helpful add-on gives warnings that certain actions are coming up — such as a spell to silence spellcasters, or a curse that makes your character and nearby raid buddies explode — so you can take steps to avoid or mitigate the effects.
Some guilds have put together packages of add-ons that include “Deadly Boss Mods” and others such as Omen’s threat meter, that facilitate raiding.
Some add-ons are helpful for leveling, such as QuestHelper, QuestGuru and others of the like. Others help you manage your bags and inventory, such as Outfitter. There are even add-ons that make it easier for gathering professions, such as mining and herbing, and add-ons that are made with specific character builds in mind.
There are even add-ons that allow you to run modified action bars and to change your user interface.
Curse.com makes things easy by listing add-ons by most popular, highest rated, newest, or by category — action bars, questing, raids, etc.
Take a look through what they offer and try some of them out and, most of all, have fun.
Duane M. George is the Local News editor of the Pacific Daily News and a “World of Warcraft” addict.

Caming Addiction a Growing Concern

Massively multiplayer online role playing games may be massively more addictive than the games that came before

In a famous scene in the first Matrix movie, a character takes a bite out of a juicy steak. He knows it’s not real, but enjoys it anyway. In some ways, a video game — just moving pixels on the screen — is a similar virtual reality experience. No, the aliens in Halo 3 are not real, but we pretend they are. That is how a game can pull you from a living-room couch into a foreign realm.
For some, though, video games are too compelling — too addictive. The warning signs are obvious: compulsive playing, scorning friends and family in the real world, an inability to think about other subjects. Ten million people have signed up to play the PC role-playing game world of Warcraft In Halo 3, the wildly popular first-person shooter for Xbox 360, almost 7 billion people have been killed online since its debut, and 11 million die each day, according to ITwire.com.
Sobering statistics? Or maybe just a lot of people having a really good time?
Whichever view you hold, the fact remains that video game addiction is a real problem. According to Kimberly Young, who wrote the book Caught in the Net, online games like World of Warcraft can be more addictive than single-player video games; collaborative elements and chat features make it especially hard to put the controller down. A first step is to just admit the problem. One site, WoWdetox, acts as a community support group for players who want to quit the habit. Users post their pleas, rants, and stories.

Many posters on WoWdetox decry the value of the game compared to real life: “Over half a year wasted,” says one. “Please God, somebody help me, I don’t know what to do,” says another. A few explain that they have decided to cut down, not quit cold turkey; some aim to play only 30 minutes per day. I asked Blizzard, the makers of World of Warcraft, to comment on the problem, but they did not return emails inquiring about WoW addiction.
“WoW addiction is a problem as it can interfere with people’s real-life relationships and responsibilities,” says Jessie Johnson, who runs WoWdetox. “Not only that, but real life seems to take a back burner to WOW for just about everything except the bare necessities for some people.”
If you think you might be addicted to video games, you can find information and (offline) counseling centers via the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery.

A new ‘World’ of togetherness

Couples find a shared interest in popular role-playing video game ‘World of Warcraft’
By Brad Wilcox Chicago Tribune Newspapers

Cynthia Murdock caught the “world of Warcraft
” bug from her husband, and at first it was just a matter of survival. Brad, Cynthia’s husband, had played the hugely popular video game for years before he introduced his wife to it in 2007, when an expansion of the game, “World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade,” was introduced. “When we first started dating, I didn’t play, and he played a lot,” recalled Cynthia. “I started playing because I got sick of just lying around watching TV and trying to crochet.”Besides, noted Brad, “We’re sitting side by side while we’re playing, so we can talk to each other. We’re talking about what we’re doing and how our day was while we’re playing.” (Here’s how serious they are about the game: They’ve removed their dining room table and replaced it with an L-shaped desk capable of supporting two computers.)
Frank Pearce, founding member and senior vice president of product development for Blizzard Entertainment, the game’s developer and production company, believes he knows why couples such as the Murdocks might prefer staying in all weekend playing Warcraft to going out. “There’s a huge social element to the game. We’ve had this huge, massive community grow out of the experience,” Pearce said. “The community is really a big factor that draws people into the game and keeps them in the game as well.”For the uninitiated, “World of Warcraft” is what’s known in the trade as a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, or MMORPG. People from all over the world participate simultaneously in these games in which participants are integral characters in a virtual world. The game has 10 million subscribers worldwide. Unlike most video games targeted at younger men, Warcraft has succeeded in bringing women to the game with a diversity of features. “It’s a social experience; it’s not just an entertainment experience,” Pearce said. In fact, many women play because of the social aspect.
“It’s real-time interaction with other people, and you’re not just sitting there fighting against some boss [enemy] that doesn’t have a brain behind it,” said Cynthia. “I really, really like playing with other people.”The latest expansion of the game, “World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King,” is rumored to be coming within the next year, although Blizzard would not give a specific release date. “We typically try to avoid launch windows until we’re pretty sure we can achieve them,” Pearce said. The Murdocks said that “World of Warcraft” has brought them closer together and saved them a ton of money (wow gold ) in the process. Of course, some wives of gamers aren’t buying. Michael Akers, a waiter at a Kennesaw, Ga. , restaurant, prefers to wait for his wife to fall asleep before logging into the “World of Warcraft.” A self-described recluse, Akers seldom ventures out of the house, other than to go to work, but he still wants to be connected to the outside world. Playing the game allows him to do that. “My friends all know that I don’t like talking on the phone or going to parties. I’m a bit of a hermit,” Akers said. Akers has yet to persuade his wife, Andrea, to purchase an L-shaped desk for their dining room and pull up a chair alongside him to play the game. “It’s funny, because her twin sister plays world of Warcraft
with her husband all the time,” he said by phone.Los Angeles Times

Eight Wonders of the Gaming World Announced

Any of you gamers out there ready for a summer vacation, but you don’t know just what to do or where to go? Well, we here at TGR, with thanks to the good people at GamePro, are bringing you GamePro’s list of the Eight Most Powerful Video Game Studios. Time to take a trip down memory lane:1.Epic Games-Appropriately at the top of the list we have Epic Games, located in Cary, North Carolina . The company became a sensation not only from their smash Gears of War, but also due to the widespread popularity of their middleware engine that has been picked up for use in more games then it is possible to list here. They are, well, epic.
2. Bungie-We all know this one. Not only have they created one of the most popular FPS series around, but they have also assisted in popularizing the genre as a whole.
3. Rockstar North-Beginning with Lemmings, which Rockstar North created back in the day as DMA Design, the studio has created some of gaming most memorable properties. Rockstar North is known most of all for it’s creation of the Grand Theft Auto series, which has changed much of how we view games and how they impact society. Like them or loathe them, Rockstar North has participated in creating one of the most crucial games even created.4.Maxis Software-Originally best known for the multiple variations of it’s SimCity franchise, the California-based Maxis has really given itself a leg up with the creation of the Sims series - which has resulted in sales of over 100 million copies all over the world. It’s the 3rd best selling game series of all time. 5. EA Tiburon-Tiburon: in another language it means shark, and EA Tiburon has certainly lived up to it’s name with the creation of Madden NFL Football, which has become one of the highest grossing game series ever created.6. Sony Computer Entertainment-Sony, the studio behind the Playstation console, started it all by severing relations with Nintendo. Since that day, the company has carried some of the biggest games ever, and will no doubt go on to make many more.7. Blizzard Entertainmen The studio that needs no introduction. The Irvine,California company is a keyword amongst gamers for it’s creation of the Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft series, in addition to the gaming superbeing known as World of Warcraft. Just have a look at the
wow gold business it promotes on the Internet!8. Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development-Despite the uninspiring name, this studio is actually one of most potent powerhouses behind Nintendo. Shigeru Miyamoto worked here for many years, allowing us many fond memories of games such as the Legend of Zelda series, the Super Mario Brothers, and the by now world famous hardware pair of the Nintendo Wii and WiiFit.So there you have it, the biggest, the best, and the brightest. These studios have not only created excellent games, they’ve also helped to bring gaming into the forefront of the world’s attention, albeit not always with positive results (sorry Rockstar). Despite some bad press, these companies have rendered gamers services that we should all be grateful for, because without their hard work and dedication, the gaming world today would be a very different and - more to the point - much less fun place to be in.
